In the 1880's, Port Howard had its own Try-works where old sheep were rendered down to make tallow.
The plant used waste heat from the process to dry the skins.

To the left of the photograph can be seen a three-masted barque waiting to take the tallow away.

Little has changed in the way that the farm operates over the last 130 years. This photograph was taken in the 1960's showing shepherds at the Mount Rosalie sheep dip.
